McCoist blasts Scotland fans for booing England anthem
Ally McCoist has branded Scotland fans who booed England’s national anthem at Friday night’s match as ‘totally out of order’.
The former Scotland striker said he was “embarrassed” by the behaviour of some supporters at Hampden Park, which he described as “disrespectful” and “unpatriotic”.
McCoist, who won 61 caps for Scotland, said: “I’m all for a bit of banter between the two sets of fans, but booing the national anthem is just not on. It’s disrespectful to the players, the fans and the country as a whole.”
He added: “I’m sure the vast majority of Scotland fans are as embarrassed by this behaviour as I am. We’re better than this.”
McCoist’s comments come after a number of Scotland fans were seen booing the England national anthem before the match. The incident was widely condemned on social media, with many people calling for those responsible to be banned from future matches.
The Scottish Football Association (SFA) has since launched an investigation into the incident. A spokesperson for the SFA said: “We are aware of the incident and are investigating it. We will take appropriate action against anyone found to have been involved.”
