Ending An Eight Year Run

Miami Dolphins release cornerback Xavien Howard

Ending an eight-year run

Howard was a four-time Pro Bowl selection with the Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins released cornerback Xavien Howard on Wednesday, ending the eight-year run of one of the NFL's top defensive backs.

Howard, a two-time All-Pro selection, was due to make $12.9 million in base salary in 2023. He had requested a trade from the Dolphins in March, but the team was unable to find a suitable deal.

Howard's release comes amidst a busy offseason for the Dolphins, who have also traded away quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The team is expected to rebuild around young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and a revamped defense.

Howard's departure leaves a big hole in the Dolphins' secondary. He was one of the NFL's top cornerbacks in 2020, when he led the league with 10 interceptions. He was also named to the Pro Bowl in 2017, 2018, and 2021.

The Dolphins are expected to sign free agent cornerback Byron Jones to replace Howard. Jones is a former Pro Bowl selection who was released by the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason.
